As I said I made my first ever trip to Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre on Sunday evening to see Streatham take on Swindon Wildcats, here is how it panned out:-

Streatham 5 Swindon Wildcats 1
A Doughty hat-trick plus Colclough heroics in the hosts net helped Streatham to a stunning win over the Wildcats in South London.

Streatham came into this one having not had the best of luck so far in the division, with just one win from eight coming into this fixture. And after their penalty shoot out defeat the day before against Thunder, they probably wondered when their luck would change.

The Wildcats themselves came into this one off to back of two National Cup Group D wins over Telford Tigers and Bracknell Bees and were understandably favourites to defeat Streatham here.

However the hosts had other ideas and stunned the visitors by taking the lead with 7:17 on the clock in the first period when Doughty batted down a point shot from Farn to give the home fans something to celebrate.

But just 57 seconds later Wildcats struck straight back when Jones converted from in front and it was all tied up with 8:14 on the clock but with 2:43 left in the opening period Streatham regained the lead when Doughty snapped a decent effort past Marr who was unsighted by his D man.

And it got better for the home side when after Nell had pinged the bar for Wildcats, the hosts stretched their lead inside the final minute of the period when Webb broke through and smacked one in off the bar.

The opening period ended with Hayes and Zajac dropping gloves and brought to a close a frenetic twenty minutes and saw the hosts with a terrific lead.

Swindon knew they needed a fast start in the second period but they found Colclough in fine form in the hosts net, and it got worse for the visitors when Doughty completed his hat-trick with 6:27 left in the second period when he tipped home a point shot from Baird and the hosts had a three goal cushion.

The period ended with Streatham putting in some heroic defending, especially Siagris, who managed to do it without his stick and slid on all fours to get the puck away. It tippified the hosts work rate and determination and they went into the final period three goals clear.

Into the third period and Colclough had to make two decent stops to prevent Swindon coming back into the contest and they even had to survive a five on three after penalties against Miles and Paynter, however they kept Swindon at bay and maintain that decent lead.

With 2:33 remaining Swindon pulled their keeper in a desperate attempt to have one final assault on getting back into the contest, but it backfired as Hayes fired into the open goal and seal a memorable win for the home side.

Hat-trick hero Doughty was named man of the match for the hosts although Colclough also played a blinder in the net for Streatham but the team certainly put in a shift to stun a shell shocked Wildcats.

Yes the hosts had a bit of luck tonight, but it's luck that has deserted them in the last few weeks, so this was more than deserved. For Swindon it was a humbling experience but one loss doesn't make you a bad side so they will surely come again.

A great evening and an enjoyable game of hockey was had by myself and well done Redhawks!!!!

Here are some photos from my evening at Streatham:-

Right let's round up the remaining action in Division One:-
Peterborough Phantoms had yet another good weekend as they as made it two from two in the Autumn Cup Group 1 with victory over Sheffield Steeldogs before making it nine from nine in the league with victory over Invicta Dynamos on Sunday.  Bracknell Bees bounced back from a National Cup loss at Swindon on Saturday to defeat London Raiders and maintain second place whilst Basingstoke Bison are now seven from seven after a weekend double over bottom side Cardiff Fire, with the match in Cardiff finishing 12-2, as Fire have now lost all eleven in the league.  Thunder defeated Streatham on penalties after a 4-4 draw in Milton Keynes on Saturday evening in controversial circumstances after Streatham thought they had won it in overtime but saw the goal ruled out, meaning Thunder took their fourth win of the season, and Raiders defeated Dynamos in the National Cup Group C although Streatham are still in charge of that group having won all four games in that competition.

Here are next weekends fixtures in Division One:-
Saturday 4th November

Bracknell Bees vs Cardiff Fire
Basingstoke Bison vs Milton Keynes Thunder

National Cup Group C
Streatham vs Invicta Dynamos

Autumn Cup Group 2

Bristol Pitbulls 1-2 Guildford

Sunday 29th October
Oxford City Stars 18-1 Basingstoke Buffalo
Swindon Wildcats 2 2-10 Peterborough Phantoms 2

Latest Standings in Division Two
1. Peterborough Phantoms 2 Played 7 Won 7 Pts 14
2. Oxford City Stars Played 7 Won 6 Pts 12
3. Bracknell Hornets Played 5 Won 5 Pts 10
4. Guildford Played 7 Won 5 Pts 10

12. Slough Jets Played 7 Won 1 Pts 2
13. Swindon Wildcats 2 Played 6 Won 0 Pts 0
14. Lee Valley Lions Played 6 Won 0 Pts 0

The top two both enjoyed enormous wins on Sunday evening, Phantoms 2 putting Ten past Wildcats 2 whilst Oxford hit Eighteen at home to Buffalo.  This meant Phantoms 2 have now won seven from seven whilst Stars are six from seven so far.  Chieftains played their first game since October 8th and showed no rustyness as they defeated a decent Solent Devils team in Gosport to make it three wins from three and hand the Hampshire side their second loss of the season.  Invicta Mustangs had an impressive win over Cardiff Fire 2, which was the Welsh sides first loss of the season, and Guildford are into fourth after a win on the road at Bristol Pitbulls, who lose their fourth game in five.

Here are next weekend's Division Two fixtures:-
Saturday 4th November

Lee Valley Lions vs Solent Devils
Slough Jets vs Cardiff Fire 2

Sunday 5th November
Guildford vs Invicta Mustangs
Peterborough Phantoms 2 vs Oxford City Stars

9. Cardiff Fire Played 9 Won 0 Pts 0

The big game on Saturday between the top two went the way of Peterborough Phantoms as they remain with a 100% record after an overtime win over Swindon Wildcats, who drop to third.  This was after Bracknell Bees had two wins at the weekend although they were both close encounters against London Raiders and then Invicta Dynamos with the latter an overtime victory.  The Wildcats did at least grab an overtime win of their own on Sunday, edging a tight contest against Hull Pirates in the Autumn Cup Group 2, which saw them increase their lead at the top of that group.  Basingstoke Bison are the only other 100% side in the division after they edged a seven goal encounter at Streatham on Sunday, this being the hosts seventh defeat in eight league games.  Streatham did at least taste victory this weekend though in the National Cup Group C where they defeated Invicta Dynamos on the road to make it four wins from four in that particular competition.

Just like their first team counterparts, the Peterborough Phantoms 2 are 100% after six games following a crushing win over bottom side Lee Valley Lions, who remain bottom with six defeats from six following that loss and also another thrashing at Cardiff Fire 2 the day before.  Oxford City Stars moved up into third spot after they destroyed Basingstoke Buffalo on the road in Hampshire and Guildford are up to fourth following their win on the road at Swindon Wildcats 2, who themselves remain second bottom having lost all five of their games.  Solent Devils made it four wins from five after they mauled the Bristol Pitbulls in the South West to climb into sixth spot and Slough Jets grabbed their first win of the season after an overtime win over Invicta Mustangs and move above them in the table on points difference.

Season 2017/18 - October 7th & 8th

Here is my latest blog on the weekend's NIHL Division One (Britton) and Division Two (Wilkinson) so here are the results from the weekend:-
Division One (Britton)
Saturday 7th October
Bracknell Bees 6-1 Streatham
Swindon Wildcats 7-0 Cardiff Fire
Basingstoke Bison 7-1 London Raiders

Sunday 8th October
Invicta Dynamos 3-5 Basingstoke Bison
London Raiders 2-7 Swindon Wildcats
Cardiff Fire 1-5 Bracknell Bees
Streatham 1-3 Milton Keynes Thunder

Swindon Wildcats have taken over at the top of Division One after recording two thumping wins over the weekend, hitting seven past bottom side Cardiff Fire and another seven past London Raiders to go a point clear at the top.  Bracknell Bees also recorded a double win at the weekend to remain in third spot whilst Milton Keynes Thunder are fourth after a win on the road at Streatham.  Also Basingstoke Bison netted two wins over the weekend to make it three wins from three on the season, seeing them in fifth spot right now.  Down the bottom Cardiff Fire remain the only side side without a point after they lost twice over the weekend and have now lost eight from eight in the league so far.  Another team to have a poor weekend were London Raiders who shipped seven in both their games to fall to second bottom having lost two of their three games now.  Streatham are also struggling after two losses at the weekend, meaning they have lost four out of five so far this season.

Here are the latest Division One Standings:-
1. Swindon Wildcats Played 6 Points 11
2. Peterborough Phantoms Played 5 Points 10
3. Bracknell Bees Played 6 Points 10
4. Milton Keynes Thunder Played 8 Points 7
5. Basingstoke Bison Played 3 Points 6
6. Invicta Dynamos Played 6 Points 4
7. Streatham Played 5 Points 2
8. London Raiders Played 3 Points 2
9. Cardiff Fire Played 8 Points 0

Meanwhile I failed to mention in my last blog that the Division One sides have also been taking part in Cup Competiton's and in the National Cup Group B Peterborough Phantoms top the Group following an 11-6 win at home to Hull Pirates, this after they had lost in Hull 6-3 two weekend before.  In an all South Group C, Streatham lead the way with three wins from three over London Raiders and Invicta Dynamos, Raiders have two wins from five whilst Dynamos have lost both their games so far.  And in Group D Swindon Wildcats lead the group on points difference from Telford Tigers, with Bracknell Bees and Basingstoke Bison two points behind them, however Bison have played more games then the rest, loosing four out of five.

Also in the Autumn Cup Group 1 Basingstoke Bison lead the group with two wins from two, closely followed by Peterborough Phantoms on two points and Sheffield Steeldogs who have lost all three games so far.  And finally in Group 2 there have been no games as yet in a group that contains Hull Pirates, Swindon Wildcats and Telford Tigers.

Right onto Division Two, here are this weekend's results:-
Saturday 7th October
Solent Devils 13-4 Lee Valley Lions
Invicta 4-3 Swindon Wildcats 2
Haringey Huskies 2-13 Peterborough Phantoms 2
Slough Jets 5-7 Guildford

Sunday 8th October
Guildford 4-5 Basingstoke Buffalo
Bracknell Hornets 5-3 Haringey Huskies
Chelmsford Chieftains 11-1 Invicta

Peterborough Phantoms 2 laid down a marker by thrashing fellow top of the table side Haringey Huskies 13-2 in their own backyard, and then the Huskies lost to another top three side Bracknell Bees the next day to make it a poor weekend for the North London outfit.  It means a three way tie at the top between those three sides with the top two, Phantoms and Hornets, still with 100% records.  Anothe side with an 100% record is the Chelmsford Chieftains who thrashed Invicta at Riverside 11-1, although the game saw five players ejected, four of them in the first period after a huge fight, however that was the only time the visitors got toe to toe with the hosts as they were well beaten.  Down the bottom and the Lee Valley Lions have lost all four games after a 13-4 loss at Solent Devils in Gosport, whilst Swindon Wildcats 2 have lost all three games following a 4-3 loss to Invicta on Saturday night, which was Invicta's first win after three losses.  Another team who have lost all four games are Slough Jets, who were beaten 7-5 at home by Guildford who for them this was there second win in four starts.  Guildford did lose the next day to Basingstoke Buffalo in a close encounter in Surrey.

Pics from Riverside in Chelmsford on Sunday evening where the Chieftains overran Invicta 11-1 to maintain their 100% start to the season

Here are the latest standings for Division Two:-
1. Peterborough Phantoms 2 Played 4 Points 8
2. Bracknell Hornets Played 4 Points 8
3. Haringey Huskies Played 6 Points 8
4. Oxford City Stars Played 4 Points 6
5. Solent Devils Played 3 Points 4
6. Basingstoke Buffalo Played 5 Points 4
7. Guildford Played 4 Points 4
8. Chelmsford Chieftains Played 2 Points 4
9. Cardiff Fire 2 Played 1 Points 2
10. Bristol Pitbulls Played 3 Points 2
11. Invicta Played 5 Points 2

Season 2017/18 - Opening Weeks

Wildcats 2s and Chieftains line up prior to their Division Two clash on Sunday evening, a match that the visitors won 13-4 (thanks to Black and Gold Army for the photo)

Last month saw the National Ice Hockey League get underway for the new season and I'll be blogging on the two South Divisions throughout the season.  First of all here are the results so far for the NIHL South One (Britton) Division:-

Saturday 9th September
Basingstoke Bison 4 Invicta Dynamos 0
Milton Keynes Thunder 5 Bracknell Bees 7

Sunday 10th September
Invicta Dynamos 2 Milton Keynes Thunder 3

Milton Keynes Thunder 5 London Raiders 7
Streatham 9 Cardiff Fire 2

Saturday 23rd September
Cardiff Fire 0 Milton Keynes Thunder 6
Peterborough Phantoms 5 Streatham 2

Sunday 24th September
Bracknell Bees 11 Cardiff Fire 1
Milton Keynes Thunder 2 Peterborough Phantoms 5

Saturday 30th September
Swindon Wildcats 7 Invicta Dynamos 4
Peterborough Phantoms 13 Cardiff Fire 1

Sunday 1st October

3. Bracknell Bees 6pts
4. Milton Keynes Thunder 5pts
5. Invicta Dynamos 4pts
6. Basingstoke Bison 2pts
7. Streatham 2pts
8. London Raiders 2pts
9. Cardiff Fire 0pts

The Phantoms top the table with five wins from five whilst Fire are six defeats from six and have conceded 53 goals in those six as their start to the season has been a struggle.  The only other teams with 100% records are Bison and Raiders although those two have only played one game so far.

Below are the fixures for this weekend:-
Saturday 7th October
Bracknell Bees Vs Streatham
Swindon Wildcats Vs Cardiff Fire
Basingstoke Bison Vs London Raiders

Sunday 8th October
Invicta Dynamos Vs Basingstoke Bison
London Raiders Vs Swindon Wildcats
Cardiff Fire Vs Bracknell Bees
Streatham Vs Milton Keynes Thunder

Leaders Phantoms have a weekend off meaning Wildcats could go top if they win both their weekend games against Fire and Raiders.  Bees could also join the leaders at the top if they win both their weekend matchups against Streatham and Fire, whilst Bison and Raiders will look to keep their 100% records going too.  Fire, who have lost every game, travel to 2nd placed Wildcats before hosting 3rd placed Bees, meaning a tough weekend for them no doubt.

Right onto the NIHL South Two (Wilkinson) Division now:-
Sunday 10th September
Bristol Pitbulls 5 Slough Jets 4
Basingstoke Buffalo 0 Haringey Huskies 2s 5

Saturday 16th September

Haringey Huskies 2s 10 Swindon Wildcats 2s 2

Sunday 1st October
Lee Valley Lions 0 Guildford 2
Peterborough Phantoms 2s 3 Solent Devils 2
Oxford City Stars 8 Slough Jets 2
Basingstoke Buffalo 6 Invicta 3
Swindon Wildcats 2s 4 Chelmsford Chieftains 13

After those results here are the standings:-
1. Haringey Huskies 2s 8pts
2. Bracknell Hornets 6pts
3. Peterborough Phantoms 2s 6pts
4. Oxford City Stars 6pts
5. Solent Devils 2pts
6. Basingstoke Buffalo 2pts
7. Chelmsford Chieftains 2pts
8. Cardiff Fire 2s 2pts
9. Guildford 2pts
10. Bristol Pitbulls 2pts
11. Invicta 0pts
12. Lee Valley Lions 0pts
13. Slough Jets 0pts
14. Swindon Wildcats 2s 0pts

Huskies 2s have four wins from four and sit top of the division whilst Hornets have three wins from three and are close behind.  Cheiftains and Fire 2s both have 100% records have played only one game whilst Invicta, Lions, Jets and Wildcats 2s are all yet to win a game this season.

Lets look ahead to the weekend's fixtures:-
Saturday 7th October
Solent Devils Vs Lee Valley Lions
Invicta Vs Swindon Wildcats 2s
Haringey Huskies 2s Vs Peterborough Phantoms 2s
Slough Jets Vs Guildford

Sunday 8th October
Guildford Vs Basingstoke Buffalo
Bracknell Hornets Vs Haringey Huskies 2s
Chelmsford Chieftains Vs Invicta

Leaders Huskies 2s have two very tough games this weekend, hosting third placed Phantoms 2s before travelling to 2nd placed Hornets on Sunday.  Fire 2s have the weekend off whilst the other 100% side Chieftains host 0% Invicta at Riverside on Sunday evening.  Jets, Lions and Wildcats 2 are all also looking to bag a first win of the campaign this weekend too.

I'll be back next week with a look back at this weekend's fixtures.  Enjoy it whatever you may do!!!

Season 2017/18 - Playoff's Catchup and Season Wind Down

It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog on the NIHL so this one is basically going to be mainly about the North and South One playoff’s...
